Karibu sana!
Volunteering in Tanzania
Welcome to Tanzania, a fascinating and friendly place to live and work, and where we at VSO have been active since 1961.
This is a geographically massive and diverse country with potential to match, but one facing many challenges.
Ranked #151 on the Human Development Index, more than a third of households here get by on less than $1 a day. Maternal and neonatal mortality rates are high, and only around four in ten children finish their secondary education.
Could you be part of bringing positive change to Tanzania?
With more than 50 years’ experience supporting volunteers you’ll be in good hands. We’ll do all we can to help you settle and make the biggest possible difference.
All the best

Youth volunteering in Tanzania with ICS
VSO ICS volunteers ready for the Community Action Day held for local members of the community in Lindi, Tanzania.
“I am very proud to volunteer with ICS. The project helped me to improve my personal development skills. I am not the same as before: I am comfortable to work anywhere in the world and make it better.”
- Nasir Bakari, VSO ICS Volunteer, Tanzania.
We have fully-funded opportunities for young people aged 18-25 to volunteer on projects lasting around 10 weeks on our International Citizen Service (ICS) programme.
ICS volunteers work in Lindi region and Zanzibar on projects working to improve conditions for farmers, entrepreneurs and SMEs. Not only do ICS volunteers say it is useful in helping gain further education and employment, they are making a difference:
- 10 youth groups supported by ICS saw a 500% increase in income
- In five Tanzanian schools where ICS volunteers worked, there is an 84% increase in student satisfaction with the introduction of school clubs and the use of teaching aids
If you are a Tanzanian national interested in volunteering with ICS please contact our local office by email: tanzania.info@vsoint.org
UK nationals interested in youth volunteering can apply through our ICS youth volunteering pages.
