Welkam to PNG!
Volunteering in Papua New Guinea
VSO is in the process of scaling back its work in Papua New Guinea. Unfortunately, we have been unable to attract the funding needed to maintain a large office in a country with such high operating costs.
We're grateful for the contributions to PNG development made by more than 2,100 volunteers from around the world.
Did you work with VSO in PNG? Please share your stories and photos with us by emailing Communications Officer Sophie Craig.
“I wouldn’t be able to work at policy level in the UK but in PNG it is possible. I have been able to create work to shape curriculum reform, as well as being involved in rewriting the primary language curriculum."

The VSO family
One of the most important things to remember as you leave your current work and life behind is that you are going to be warmly welcomed and valued. You may be a long way from home, but you'll be greeted with PNGs famously wholehearted hospitality.
“ I’m the person who will be with you from the very beginning, answering your questions during pre-departure, running your in-country training and being your main point of contact during your placement. I can’t wait to meet you at the airport or in the office and to introduce you to what your life will be like in PNG!”
Nadine Paira, HR officer, PNG
What we do
The VSO PNG team supports 45 volunteers working across the country. We have worked in PNG since 1960, when VSO opened its first permanent overseas office.
Since then, volunteers have forged a strong reputation in the country, from remote communities in the rugged Riakos to government departments in the capital, Port Moresby. We work on education, gender and governance, health and HIV projects.
